Quick answer

A presumption can remove the need to prove medical causation between service and a listed condition. It does not remove every requirement: the veteran still needs a qualifying current condition and evidence that the service, location, exposure, manifestation period, or other trigger fits the specific presumption.

How to check a presumptionDetails
  • Identify the exact diagnosed condition; similar-sounding conditions are not automatically interchangeable.
  • Confirm the qualifying service dates, locations, unit, duty, or exposure facts.
  • Check any manifestation deadline and required minimum level of disability.
  • Use the current regulation or VA eligibility page because lists and locations can change.
  • Keep evidence of current severity separate from evidence establishing eligibility for the presumption.
Major groups of presumptionsDetails
  • Certain chronic diseases manifesting within specified periods after service.
  • Diseases associated with herbicide exposure, including Agent Orange.
  • Qualifying disabilities associated with Gulf War service.
  • Certain respiratory diseases and cancers tied to specified particulate-matter and burn-pit service.
  • Additional rules for former prisoners of war, radiation exposure, contaminated water, and other defined circumstances.
If the condition is not on the listDetails

A condition that is not presumptive may still be considered under direct service connection. That route generally requires evidence of the exposure or event, a current disability, and competent evidence connecting them.

Common questionsDetails
  • Does qualifying service guarantee compensation? — No. The current condition and all requirements of the specific presumption must still be met.
  • Do I need a nexus letter for a listed presumptive condition? — The presumption supplies the specified link when its requirements are satisfied, though other medical questions may remain.
  • What if VA denied before the law changed? — A Supplemental Claim or another review path may be available; effective-date rules can be complicated.
